Welcome. This past week, a close friend of mine lost a child--or, rather--lost a fertilized egg that she had high hopes would develop into a child. She's been attempting to conceive for a very long time and at a considerable financial and emotional toll. In the same week, another friend of mine had an abortion after becoming pregnant under circumstances that simply wouldn't make sense for either her or the child that would result from the pregnancy. These two incidents brought my thoughts back to how, just a few weeks ago, I was frighteningly close to losing one of my own children (who, btw, has recovered fully, thank you!).My point here isn't to spoil the mood but just to remind us all that family and children are such precarious concepts that can bring unthinkable joy and equally awesome pain. For those lucky enough to have a healthy family they enjoy spending time with, remember to cherish and be thankful for that. And keep in mind that far from everyone is so lucky (family is about the most random and 'undeserved' reward that can be thrown at us.) And for those who aren't endowed with such luck, it's always good to remember that family isn't just a biological set-up. Family can be found anywhere!Ok, enough sentimentality. This week I'm launching a new idea: an interview with an inspiring person who does inspiring work. I'm not sure if it'll be a weekly feature but I'll keep posting these brief conversations as long as I have someone to interview. Let me know if you think there's someone I should speak to. Find the interview at the bottom.Enjoy, keep reading and have a family-oriented--broadly understood--week ahead.
